How can we help?

Winchester Food & Basics Bank gives out emergency food, clothing and household basics to anyone in the city or surrounding area who needs them. Last year, we helped 8,057 of your neighbours.

Self-Referral

If you’re new to us and an agency appointment is too far away, you can refer yourself online up to four times a year.

A local charity, run by your neighbours

We were set up in 2004 by a group of Winchester churches who wanted to make sure no one in the city had to go without food or clothing. Two decades on, that’s still what we do.

We’re not part of a national network and we don’t take government funding. Most of what we give out is paid for by people who live near you — through churches, businesses, schools, the City Council and individual donations.

If today is hard, come in

You don’t need an appointment, you don’t need paperwork, and you don’t need to explain why you’re here. A volunteer will meet you, work out what you need, and send you home with it.

Everything is free, and everything you tell us stays with us.

At the heart of the community

We started in 2004 with one church and a few cardboard boxes. Today we work out of five hubs, including St Barnabas in Weeke and St Gregory’s Church in Alresford, with around 80 volunteers giving their time each week.

The need has grown a lot. In 2019 we helped 1,531 people. By 2025, this demand had increased significant and we helped 8,051 people. In December 2025, the Bishop of Winchester, the Rt Revd Philip Mounstephen, agreed to be our President. We’re grateful — both for what it says about the work, and for what it means for the people we’re here to support.
